The honest details
How bulk billing actually works for psychology
Bulk billing means the psychologist accepts the Medicare rebate ($101.55 per session for a registered psychologist, $149.05 for a clinical psychologist, as of July 2026) as full payment. You need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP first - it covers up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year.
Two things worth knowing. First, most practitioners bulk bill selectively - for healthcare card holders, students, or people in financial hardship - rather than for everyone, so mention your situation when you make contact. Second, a healthcare card doesn’t increase the Medicare rebate itself; it’s simply a signal many practitioners use when deciding whether to bulk bill, at their discretion.
If none of these psychologists fit, describe what you need including your budget - psychologists choose to take your case knowing what you can afford, which avoids the awkward fee conversation entirely.
